Alberto Orte La Antigua Rioja Reserva 2015 is a masterclass in classic Spanish winemaking. Inspired by the elegant styles of the early twentieth century, this red wine focuses on freshness and deep minerality. It originates from the steep, high elevation terrain of the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range. Here, north facing vineyards sit at nearly twenty three hundred feet. The vines, planted between 1940 and 1955, grow in rare red silica and limestone soils.
Because these remote mountain vineyards receive limited sunshine, the grapes ripen very slowly. Harvest often pushes into early November. The rugged landscape makes machine farming impossible, so every vine is tended entirely by hand. This intense dedication yields a highly focused and balanced wine that stands apart from typical valley floor Rioja.
The blend features sixty percent Garnacha, thirty percent Tempranillo, and ten percent Graciano. After harvest, the wine ages for an incredible seventy two months in a mix of French and American oak barrels, followed by ten months in the bottle.
In the glass, it reveals a deep red color. Lively aromas of cherry, red berry, and pipe tobacco rise from the rim, accented by subtle smoke and spice. The palate is seamless and focused. Juicy raspberry and tart cherry flavors expand and sweeten with air. Well integrated tannins provide structure, leading to a long, energetic finish with a touch of floral character. With built in longevity, this Rioja is beautiful to drink now but will continue to age gracefully. It is a brilliant choice for collectors and casual dinner pairings alike.
