Luis Seabra Xisto Illimitado Branco 2023 offers a brilliant introduction to the new era of Portuguese winemaking. Crafted by renowned winemaker Luis Seabra, this white wine captures the pure essence of the Douro Valley. By focusing on the land rather than just grape varieties, Seabra creates a field blend that drinks with the complexity of a fine village-level Burgundy.

The wine is a precise blend of Rabigato, Gouveio, Codega, and Viosinho. These grapes grow on thirty to forty-five-year-old vines planted high in the Cima Corgo subregion. At this elevation, extreme day and night temperature shifts allow the fruit to hang longer on the vine. This slow ripening develops intense flavors while keeping the acidity sharp. The vines root deeply into the famous mica schist soils, which give the wine its signature mineral character.

In the cellar, Seabra uses minimal intervention to let the vineyard speak. The juice ferments entirely with wild native yeasts. Ninety percent of the wine ages in used oak barrels, while ten percent rests in stainless steel. It spends a full year on the lees without stirring, adding a rich texture without masking the bright fruit.

In the glass, it pours a bright straw yellow. The nose bursts with stone fruit, wet flint, and a dash of white pepper. On the palate, it strikes a perfect balance between lift and power. Crisp flavors of green apple, lemon, and bosc pear mix with elegant floral notes and crushed slate. It is deeply mineral-driven and incredibly juicy.
