Sourcing across all four distinct geological formations of the appellation-Alpine galets roulés, marine Urgonian limestone, fine safre sands, and fossilized red sandstone-this classic cuvée captures a balanced cross-section of Chateauneuf-du-Pape terroir. Unlike modern expressions aged in small, high-toast barriques that mask primary fruit with heavy wood vanillin, L'Oratoire des Papes vinifies gently at moderate temperatures and matures exclusively in large neutral truncated oak vats and concrete tanks. This approach preserves the delicate floral lift of sandy soils and the limestone's natural acidity while letting the clay-backed rolled pebbles supply necessary broad-shouldered power.
Medium-to-full in physical weight, the palate leads with crushed redcurrant, fresh raspberry, and blueberry before drying into savory licorice and ground peppercorn. In-house testing at USQ showed that the 2023 vintage exhibits exceptionally fine, powdery tannins that offer immediate textural pleasure while retaining the structural tension required for medium-term aging. Our team recommends decanting 30 to 45 minutes prior to service alongside braised lamb shanks, dry-aged beef, or game dishes to allow the savory garrigue nuances to fully unlock.

The 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape combines spicy garrigue, ripe black plum and licorice in a fragrant, well-layered opening. On the palate, it is full-bodied, both juicy and savoury, with ripe tannins providing gentle grip. The 2023 carries its concentration with ease, closing on a long, smooth finish.
