This historic Jamaican dark rum blends light column distillate with aromatic copper pot still rums aged between one and three years in small oak barrels. Rather than following the unadulterated, bone-dry profile of modern single-estate bottlings, it relies on traditional post-distillation additions of dark caramel coloring, sweetness, and glycerin. The nose delivers distinct Jamaican hogo-fermented overripe banana and grassy sugarcane esters-immediately grounded by deep notes of burnt molasses, dark cacao, and toasted brown sugar.
Visually dense and heavy on the tongue, the liquid exhibits a viscous, chewy palate weight engineered specifically to anchor complex, citrus-heavy cocktail builds. Bittersweet caramel and baker's cocoa lead the entry, cut by youthful pot still funk before drying out across a soft, lightly spiced oak finish. In-house testing at USQ showed that its high-viscosity profile cuts cleanly through bitter Italian aperitivos: our team recommends building a benchmark Jungle Bird by shaking 1.5 oz Coruba Dark Rum, 0.75 oz Campari, 1.5 oz fresh pineapple juice, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.5 oz simple syrup (1:1) over cracked ice, strained into a rocks glass over a single cube.
