Formulated in Milan in 1845 by Bernardino Branca, Fernet-Branca is a benchmark, high-proof amaro steeped in a proprietary maceration of 27 herbs, roots, and spices harvested across four continents. The production process involves separate spirit infusions of botanicals-including Chinese rhubarb root, French gentian, Sri Lankan galangal, and chamomile-which are then blended and aged for a full twelve months in large Slavonian oak vats. Unlike lighter aperitivi or lower-proof amari sweetened heavily with sugar syrup, Fernet-Branca is bottled at a bracing 39% ABV, yielding a deeply bitter, resinous, and uncompromisingly dry digestif profile.
Primary aromas of sharp menthol, spearmint, crushed eucalyptus, and medicinal herbs immediately dominate the nose. The physical weight on the palate is full, firm, and coating, where initial flavors of dark molasses, bitter cinchona bark, and roasted coffee quickly shift into a drying, long-lasting finish driven by earthy roots and cooling botanical oils. In-house evaluations at USQ emphasize its role as both a traditional post-dinner digestif and a formidable modifier in classic cocktail specs-our team recommends stirring an Industry Sour with equal parts (0.75 oz each) Fernet-Branca, green Chartreuse, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup, or pouring 1.5 oz neat in a snifter alongside a cold draft lager.
