Distilling from a traditional Kentucky mashbill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley, Heaven Hill's Elijah Craig Small Batch relies on marrying roughly 200 barrels aged between 8 and 12 years. Unlike expressions finished in fortified wine casks or back-sweetened post-barrel, this bourbon derives its entire structural weight and oak tannins directly from newly charred American white oak (#3 char). Cut with local Kentucky limestone-filtered water and bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV), the spirit holds a firm middle ground between lighter 80-proof entry bourbons and high-proof cask strength releases.
Primary aromas open with wildflower honey, vanilla bean, and bruised orchard fruit, backed by a subtle leaf of fresh garden mint. On the palate, a dense, medium-full weight delivers immediate notes of toasted marzipan, baking spices, nutmeg, and caramelized sugars. Mid-palate oak tannins and subtle wood smoke balance the initial honeyed drive, leading into a long, slightly drying finish with toasted wood and lingering pepper. For a classic Boulevardier, combine 1.5 oz Elijah Craig Small Batch, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, and 0.75 oz Campari stirred over ice and strained into a chilled glass with an orange twist.
