Wild myrtle berries (Myrtus communis) hand-harvested across the Sardinian maquis form the traditional foundation of Mirto Rosso, the island's quintessential digestive liqueur. Produced by the historic Argiolas estate-founded in 1938 in Serdiana-Tremontis is crafted by macerating fully ripened, deep-purple myrtle berries (the prized "fiore") directly in neutral spirit. Unlike mass-market liqueurs that rely on synthetic flavor concentrates or heavy corn syrup for body, this infusion extracts the natural waxy resins, essential oils, and rustic seed tannins of the fresh fruit, delivering an authentic balance of fruit weight, natural acidity, and botanical bitterness.

Balsamic resin, crushed eucalyptus leaf, wild juniper, and green walnut hull lead the aromatics over a concentrated dark berry base. On the palate, a lush, glycerol-coated weight carries flavors of macerated black plum, wild blueberries, and cooling camphor before giving way to a sharp, pleasantly bitter medicinal finish that rinses the palate clean. In-house testing at USQ showed that serving it straight from the freezer at 32°F emphasizes its herbal snap, though our team also favors it as a split-base amaro substitute in a Sardinian Negroni: stir 1 oz London Dry Gin, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 1 oz Argiolas Tremontis Mirto over a large ice cube, straining into a rocks glass with a fresh rosemary sprig.
