Antinori Tignanello 2020 is a true milestone wine from Tuscany. This historic wine comes exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard, a 190-acre parcel with limestone-rich soils and a prized southwestern exposure. It was the first modern red to blend Sangiovese with non-traditional grapes like Cabernet and the first to age Sangiovese in small oak barrels.
The 2020 vintage was exceptional. A hot summer without extreme heat, balanced by light rain, allowed the grapes to ripen perfectly. This blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc fermented in conical tanks to develop supple, elegant tannins.
The wine aged for 15 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels, followed by another 12 months in the bottle. The result is an intensely ruby-red wine. It offers a complex nose of ripe cherries, strawberries, violets, and roasted coffee. The palate is vibrant, with a caressing, layered feel, leading to a long, fresh finish of licorice and spice.
Newly on the market now, the 2020 Tignanello shows a gorgeous bouquet with an upfront and accessible personality. Right off the bat, you get dark cherry, dried raspberry, spice, toasted almond and citrusy blood orange. The blend is normally 75% to 80% Sangiovese with 7% Cabernet Franc. The grape in between, making up 13% to 18%, is Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage is very pretty and won’t require a long wait. The tannins are sweet and silky. “Tignanello proves itself as a great vineyard site in both the challenging and the classic years,” says Managing Director Renzo Cotarella. Annual production falls between 300,000-350,000 bottles.
