A Danish Christmas tradition, now in the US

In Denmark, the weeks before Christmas are about candlelight, long dinners and something warm in your glass. Old Norse Jule is one of the country's best-loved holiday drinks, and this season is its first release in the United States.

It's made in Billund from a slow-fermented honey base, pressed apple juice and whole cinnamon bark, then fortified to 19% so it drinks like a spiced tawny port. No added flavorings, no caramel coloring.

What's in the bottle

Wildflower honey
Slow-fermented into the base. Brings beeswax, sweetness and a rich, round texture.
Pressed apple
Adds baked orchard fruit and a natural acidity that keeps the finish clean instead of syrupy.
Whole cinnamon bark
Real spice, not flavoring. Gives the warmth and the dry, cassia finish.

Two ways to pour it

Chilled

Serve at 50 to 54°F in a small wine glass. Pour it after dinner with fruitcake, spiced desserts or a sharp aged Stilton.

Warm, as Danish gløgg

  1. Pour 3 oz of Old Norse Jule into a small saucepan with an orange wheel and a star anise pod.
  2. Warm it gently over low heat until it steams. Don't let it boil.
  3. Put a few blanched almonds and raisins in a heatproof glass mug and pour the warm mead over them.
