Distilling dried Laraha orange peels (Citrus aurantium var. curassaviensis) alongside rich pot-still rum and brandy distillates anchors this 30% ABV bottling in historic 19th-century Dutch Curaçao traditions. Unlike clear triple secs that utilize neutral spirit and focus purely on bright, candied citrus zest, Bols Orange Curaçao incorporates aged spirit fractions and bitter peel macerations to build an amber-toned, savory foundation. This dual-citrus extraction delivers natural essential oils and phenolic peel bitterness, preventing the liqueur from acting merely as a sweetener in shaken tiki and sour builds.
Palate weight registers as rich, round, and viscous, opening with candied Seville orange, baked stone fruit, and marmalade before the drying oils of bitter citrus pith tighten the back-palate. In-house testing at USQ showed that the 60-proof baseline and spiritous underpinnings provide essential spine, cutting cleanly through high-acid lime and heavy rum blends without thinning out. Our team recommends mixing an authentic 1944 Mai Tai: shake 2 oz aged Jamaican or Martinique rum, 0.5 oz Bols Orange Curaçao, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.5 oz orgeat over crushed ice, straining into a double rocks glass filled with pebble ice and garnishing with a fresh mint bouquet.
